Designed in 1934 by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, the Zig Zag Chair stands as one of the earliest examples of cantilevered seating in design history. The chair abandons the conventional legs-seat-back configuration in favour of a continuous wooden ribbon shaped like an inverted Z, composed of four flat panels joined in a rhythmic sequence that appears precarious but achieves refined structural balance.

Description

Cassina's exceptional woodworking craftsmanship is revealed in the precision of the dovetail joints, which reinforce and aesthetically enhance the chair’s intersections. The coloured version, with its open-pore finish, is particularly striking, available in stained ash in primary colours as well as black or white, and highlights the natural wood grain while accentuating the contrast between vertical, diagonal and horizontal lines. This treatment echoes several variations by Rietveld himself, aimed at exploring spatial relationships within minimalist forms. Cassina resumed production of this modernist icon in 1973 and again in 2011 for the iMaestri collection, constructing it from solid ash or American cherry wood with a semi-matte transparent varnish and fitted with plastic glides.

Today, Cassina is a leader in the contract furniture sector, continuing to leave its mark on the most exclusive projects designed by renowned international architects.
