MOLTENI & C. TABLE D.859.1

Gio Ponti

In 1958, Gio Ponti was commissioned to design the auditorium adjacent to the Time&Life building at 1271 Avenue of the Americas in New York, the headquarters of Time Inc., publisher of iconic and influential magazines such as Time, Life, Fortune, People, and Sports Illustrated. This was Ponti's most significant project in New York. The D.859.1 table, primarily used as a large conference table seating up to ten people, stands out in the auditorium not only for its imposing size—over 3.60 meters in length—but also for its refined and essential design. The trapezoidal base is notable for its lightness and modernity, resembling a single-span bridge, supporting a large, tapered tabletop that accentuates its aerodynamic form. Originally made of solid ash with brass feet, the table is now available in both the original version and in black-stained ash. In addition to the original size, the D.859.1 is also available in two smaller versions that faithfully respect the harmony and proportions of the original design.
