The D.156.3 armchair, designed by Gio Ponti for Altamira, an American company founded by the grandson of the Spanish De Cuevas, was displayed in the company’s showroom in New York alongside furniture by other renowned designers such as Ico Parisi, Franco Albini, Carlo De Carli, Ignazio Gardella, and many others, selected from the most representative works of the X Milan Triennale. Exclusively reissued by Molteni&C, the armchair features a frame made of solid canaletto walnut or black semi-gloss lacquer, with assembly and sanding done by hand, ensuring craftsmanship that enhances the elegance and sophistication of the design.

Description

The D.156.3 armchair by Gio Ponti, available in solid canaletto walnut or glossy black lacquer finishes, is a perfect blend of elegance and craftsmanship. The frame is made of solid maple for the lacquered version and solid canaletto walnut for the natural wood finish, both assembled and sanded by hand. The varnishing is applied with aniline dyes using a ragging technique, giving the piece a unique and sophisticated look. The ergonomic support straps for the backrest and seat are available in black or military green. The quilted cushion, made of polyurethane and polyester fiber, is removable. It should be noted that the cushion cover is not removable, ensuring the design’s durability. The armchair complies with TB117 or BS5852 safety standards.

The brand is distinguished by innovative design, continuous research, and the adoption of advanced production techniques, supplying furnishings for museums, hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, with collaborations from renowned designers such as Patricia Urquiola, Rodolfo Dordoni, Jean Nouvel, and Hannes Wettstein. Molteni&C received the prestigious Compasso d'Oro career award in 1994 and 2020, awarded by ADI (Association for Industrial Design). Since 2012, in collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives and under the artistic direction of Studio Cerri & Associati, it has exclusively reissued several iconic pieces by Gio Ponti, intended for private residences, special projects, or limited editions, faithfully respecting the original designs.
