The initial concept behind Le Bambole was that of a bag containing soft material that, when placed on the ground, would mold its shape based on its contents. In collaboration with the company’s Research & Development Center, the idea evolved into the form of a cushion, leading to the creation of one of the most iconic objects of the 1970s. Between 1970 and 1972, the project was realized as Le Bambole, which won the prestigious “Compasso d’Oro” in 1979. The goal was to create a new form of upholstery: a large cushion that was soft in every part, with a natural design that was difficult to synthesize in a project but immediately recognizable and comfortable. As Mario Bellini explained, Le Bambole are not simply covered in fabric but are “constructed in fabric,” with an internal structure composed of vertical edges and elastic components that fuse form and fabric in perfect balance. What makes Le Bambole special is their apparent lack of a supporting structure, the naturalness of the shape, and the perfect synthesis of comfort, softness, and elasticity. The Bambole '07, available as an armchair (Bambola), a two-seater sofa (Bibambola), a three-seater sofa (Tribambola), and poufs, were designed to be removable covers. The launch of Le Bambole took place with a bold and innovative advertising campaign that leveraged the icon of the moment, jeans. With the contribution of the young Oliviero Toscani and model Donna Jordan, the provocative and creative campaign shook the industry with an image of Donna Jordan topless, inviting people to discover the product. Despite immediate censorship, the campaign became a success, generating a wave of positive communication that contributed to the promotion of Le Bambole.
